2007-2008 BFMA International BOD Candidates Statements
Association President
Candidate:
Ray H. Killam, CFSP, CFC
President
Essociates Group, Inc.

Statement:
I am excited to announce my candidacy for President of BFMA for 2007-2008. I have been involved with BFMA for more than 20 years and I want to build on the accomplishments of those that have served before me. Here are my priorities. BFMA continues to offer the best forms training opportunities available and we need to, and will, continue to offer top quality education. That is our number one focus area.
To continue with that effort, however, we need to improve our networking opportunities. I want to lead our efforts to re-vitalize our chapter structure by creating "virtual" chapters, organized around both geography and special interest groups. Every member should belong to one (or more) chapters, with multiple opportunities to attend meetings and engage in networking opportunities with other forms professionals that share mutual interests. Chapters that provide virtual, as well as physical, meetings will provide that opportunity. I have a plan that will establish this as our number two priority.
Next, we need to increase opportunities for our sponsors to get involved with our members. The current board has introduced a new, multi-level, annual sponsorship program. It will be a high priority for the new Board to get this program moving forward.
We need to do all this while insuring fiscal responsibility for the Association. We will continue to insure that expenses remain inline with income, and work to improve income.
Thank you for your support.

Statement:
This year I served on the Board of Directors as the Director of Education. In that role I developed a deep appreciation for the industry experts and dedicated volunteers who make our educational offerings possible. Thanks to technology, continuing education and learning opportunities from BFMA are more accessible than ever. We have added online training via the Master Series webinars and virtual CFSP study groups to the traditional in-person symposium and conference events. Online offerings are likely to continue to blossom to meet the needs of members, regardless of where they are physically located.
BFMA as an organization faces challenges common in business: a changing market, constantly evolving technology, and competition for scarce attention and budget dollars. Our value proposition, however, is strong: we offer the most relevant, highly-rated education available for forms professionals, as well as information and networking opportunities.
Going forward, the board will identify the priorities for the coming year. I believe they must include building the membership base, offering excellent educational opportunities and fiscal fitness. I would like to see BFMA become the authoritative source of information regarding the forms industry. Strong relationships with sponsors are essential. As VP of Administration my focus will be the fiscal fitness and marketing of BFMA. I look forward to working with the board and other members for the continued growth of BFMA.

Statement:
My introduction to BFMA was being sent to a local community college to take a 'forms' class for a new job. The instructor, Norm Chilton introduced me to BFMA to continue my education.
I became involved as the chapter's Education Chair and I encourage everyone to become involved. This resulted in working with some real chapter forms guru's to develop a basic forms class, which I continue to instruct at Symposium.
As an education advocate, I volunteered to become Director of Education. After a number years, I ran for VP of Programs. During my term on the Program Council, the average Symposium class evaluation score rose from a little over 2 to 4.3 in Phoenix.
In addition to quality education, the Program Council meeting is more efficiently conducted in half the time. The Program Council developed the very successful fall seminars in Bellevue, Washington. The new format has made the seminars into more successful events, including the upcoming seminar in early April in the Vancouver, BC area. Also, look for new features at Symposium that will enhance the BFMA education offering.
I took the initiative to work with Tammy Gutscher to start the first Virtual Study Group for the CFSP Certification Program that grows today. Last spring, I also participated in the FSCB to develop new questions for the Certification Test.
BFMA is education, and I'm always looking for new paths to enhance our offerings and I encourage more people to become involved in the chapter level as well as the international area.

Statement:
In 2004, the current Strategic Plan was presented to BFMA and represented a blueprint for actions or standards that have not been met. While the Plan calls for a review/update every two years, most content is still very pertinent to our challenges.
I seek the position of VP-Chapter and Member Relations with a strong desire to build the membership base in both quantity and professional diversity. This position has the responsibility for Strategic Basic Functions: (1) Assess member needs and expectations and (2) Maintain an effective communication system between the Association and its members. Additionally, part of our Core Values with members is "to promote the development and growth of new chapters and a virtual networking and learning environment."
There are five key areas on which I would focus my energy to grow and support membership: (1) Complete an audit and make recommendations for a total redesign of BFMA's use of the web and its current web site; (2) Work to create virtual communication tools and structures-industry specific and for regional networking; (3) Have incentives and benefits-build relationships for companies to support multiple members; (4) Leverage membership options with students, long-term members, professional partnerships, and sponsors; (5) Coordination with headquarters on all contacts with members and leads to maximize resources.

Statement:
I've enjoyed these past twelve months representing our local chapters and their interests as Director of Chapter Member Relations on the Board of Directors. Being a chapter president myself, my interest is two fold and I wouldn't want that any other way. I look forward to serving our members once again.
Spreading the word about the value of the BFMA organization has become a personal goal of mine. I am always looking for innovative ways to foster a greater public awareness of who and what we are, such as various Chapter activities, the Spring Seminar, Symposium and training sessions with local university and health care affiliates. In this way, I hope to not only share the knowledge and expertise we enjoy as an organization, but perhaps increase our membership as well.
I began this path as a forms designer almost 14 years ago, then moved through forms manufacturing to my current position in forms management, I feel connected to each area and am aware of the value that each of us can bring to the table. As a forms professional, we need to be aware of the business processes of other industries, because no matter what those processes are, there is usually a form involved.

Statement:
My goals and aspirations for BFMA focus on raising the general awareness of the value and benefits of forms management in business. I believe we need to focus on building partnerships with educational institutions that support the notion that 'forms are the basic tools of business communication'. With support from academic institutions, BFMA will gain recognition from an outside source that validates the hard work that has been done over the years.
As Director of Non-Chapter Relations, I would like to work with BFMA to explore opportunities for developing virtual chapter memberships that will bring the same benefits to members-at-large that are currently afforded chapter members.
I like to believe I am a creative thinker. I can bring fresh ideas to BFMA. I have a passion for this industry that I believe is necessary to successfully market the value of forms management. I seek ways to use technology to facilitate and streamline processes. As a relatively new member of BFMA, I can bring an outsider's perspective that may help us in our self-assessments. Greater general awareness of BFMA will sponsor new membership, increase the demand for educational programs and provide opportunities for existing members to impart their knowledge. Partnerships with educational institutions will raise the perceived value of the CFSP designation and create a demand for skilled forms professionals.
