Chapter Event in Northwest Washington
The Northwest Washington Chapter begins a new round of dinner meetings. On November 11 the meeting speaker will be Marc Austin of Amazon. His session will be on automating workflow with mobile apps for smart phones and PDAs. The session will be held 5:30pm-7:30pm at Premera Blue Cross in Mountlake Terrace. Advances in technology have changed the way people use media, and change is happening at a faster rate. Personal computers replaced typewriters for writing documents. People now share documents via email instead of printing and mailing them. Web sites made it easy to publish information quickly. News publishers now track internet visitors instead of paper circulation. 8 track tapes replaced vinyl records, which were replaced by cassette tapes. Music sounded a lot better when it went digital with compact discs, then it became a lot more convenient with iPods. People now listen to MP3s instead of compact discs. Even the internet is changing now. Just a few years ago, most people had to sit at a desk to surf the web or use applications on a computer. Cellular phones got a lot better and converged with PDAs and iPods, freeing people to use their computers wherever they go, whenever they want.
E-Readers are now emerging as a new way to read books, and people are rapidly changing their reading habits. Amazon recently announced that it sells more e-Books than hardcover books.
Are E-Readers a viable way to read not just books but business documents? Can E-Readers be used to collect information and enhance business process in the enterprise?
Marc Austin will explore these questions from the perspective of his current position at Amazon.com and over 10 years in automating workflow with mobile applications for smart phones and PDAs. He'll demonstrate Canvas, a product he produced to turn paper forms into mobile apps for smart phones and tablet computers. He'll also demonstrate Kindle's ability to read business documents and ask how convergence may make it a viable technology for business forms management.
